So a project I was on got disbanded two months ago and a bunch of my coworkers either quit or were laid off, and I can't help thinking. That maybe part of the reason why I avoided the axe was just because I'm a girl? And I'm like the only female programmer among, what, a hundred?
For the record, I never feel like me being a girl is at all a problem at the workplace. My programmer buddies treat me like one of their own, and maybe I'm a bit shy and one of the quieter ones but a few of the men are also that, no issue. I also know I'm pretty good at my job, and they keep me around because of that too, not just my gender.
(Also for the record. I see myself as a girl, but I'm usually delighted if you misgender me. Is why my preferred pronoun is any, see me as whatever gender you want)
But also. Hmm. I wonder why there just aren't any woman programmer here. There are definitely more men than women where I work, but all the girls I know are like, artists, designers, writers, HR and PR.
No point to this post, just airing out my thoughts. Maybe society just hasn't progressed to the point that women feel comfortable taking up coding (okay now that I think about it all of my programmer friends are men too, what's up with that) and it's not my company's fault they haven't caught wind of the few women who do. But also I feel bad for my friends, who are probably as good a programmer as I am who can't keep their jobs. These are two separate issues, probably. I'm just thinking of them both
