It's been so long ago that when I started it up, I realised I remember nothing about this game. I don't remember these early scenes, these set ups. It's like playing a new game for the first time.
But I do remember the eerie atmosphere, the tension as I open a door and hoping I won't be swarmed by zombies, that I gotta be careful with my ammo and medic kit, that if I want to save lives I have to be careful. It's those little things that stay with me about the game.
I remember The Final Station as pretty much one of the best games I've played. Playing it again, with more experience under my belt, only reaffirms that. It's so good. The way it can convey so much with just minimalist pixel art, minimalist dialogues, simple mechanics. The way it can tell stories just by placing corpses and things you can pick up and decorations in the right places; AAA games wish they can have environmental storytelling as good as this game. The level design, too! The way it's linear, but it doesn't feel that linear, it still makes me feel like I'm exploring a dying town and not just a level designed for a game.
I wrote a review for The Final Station approximately three lifetimes ago. You can read it here, it's in Indonesian. One of the first time that I got paid for my writing. I'm still very proud of it; someone commented that the review is so good, it might be better than the game. No, I can now confirm that the game really is that good.
