idk why this keeps bothering me but I keep thinking about how GitHub and open source community recommends you to rename the default git branch to "main" from "master". Something to do with how "master" has roots in slavery?
And while I don't feel strongly enough about it to argue about it with strangers, I object to this. Languages are fluid and ever-shifting; a word that's offensive yesterday might be empowering today. Who looks at a "master branch" and thinks "ah yes, a master of slaves, like in the plantations of old"? No, they'd think "oh it's the master branch".
And even putting that aside, "master" doesn't solely means a master of slaves?? Even when I think about the master branch metaphorically, the opposite of it in my head is "apprentice". A word can mean multiple things! To disregard its other meanings is just, idk, kinda mean. Marginalizing.
Which gets me to thinking that my annoyance with this might be related to something else. Hmm. Well, I've written this down so hopefully it's exorcised out of my head now.
